TCM Explanation of the Formula
PMS contains the well-known
formula Xiao Yao Wan – Free and Easy Wanderer.
This formula has a dual function of releasing liver qi congestion
and tonifying the spleen to replenish blood. In TCM, the liver
is considered to have a major influence on the menstrual flow.
For the cycle to be normal, the qi must flow unimpeded. In
addition, the spleen needs to produce enough qi and blood
to allow it to flow smoothly during menstruation.
Stress, overwork etc. causes the liver qi to become obstructed
and eventually may result in a deficiency of qi and blood.
PMS symptoms are one of the ways the body reflects those imbalances.
The following herbs are also found in Xiao Yao Wan:
Bupleurum Root, Angelica Tang-Kuei, Peony Root, Peppermint
Leaf, Atractylodes Rhizome, Poria Fungus, Licorice Root (baked),
Ginger Root.
Chasteberry Fruit appears to have a significant
effect on pituitary function and studies have shown it to
demonstrate progesterone-like effects. PMS symptoms are often
correlated with a lack of progesterone.
Polygonum Stem nourishes the heart, calms
the shen and helps to regulate the blood flow.
