TCM Explanation of the Formula
This formula is intended to treat yin deficiency heat type menopausal symptoms, the most common pattern women experience. Unlike traditional TCM formulas, MENOPAUSE includes Black Cohosh and Red Clover, two western herbs which appear to have a regulatory effect on the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Studies indicate that even taken on their own, they can significantly reduce hot flashes.

In order to support this function of decreasing hot flashes and to increase the range of the formula, three other herbs that tonify the yin and/or eliminate deficiency heat are included: Eclipta Herb, Ophiopogonis, Anemarrhena Rhizome, Rehmannia Root (raw) and Moutan Bark.

Zizyphus Seed, Schizandra Fruit and Oyster Shell are included for two reasons. The first is that they have an astringent effect on the system. Fluids are easily lost due to the deficient yin’s inability to hold the yang in check. The yang rises up and out carrying yin fluids with it (especially with night sweats).

The second reason is to stabilize and calm the shen. The heart (and kidney) yin aspects are commonly affected. The yin cannot secure the shen in the heart area and the heat rising disturbs it, causing symptoms of anxiety and insomnia.

Salvia Root helps to regulate the blood flow, but also calms the shen.
Fatigue and exhaustion are also commonly experienced. Clearing out the heat and tonifying the yin and kidneys will help restore the lost qi. Cuscutae Seed is included as a neutral kidney qi and yang tonic to gently strengthen the kidney qi.

Once the heat is reduced and the hot flashes stop, the patient often experiences a rapid return of calmness and an increase of energy. This therapy should continue until the symptoms cease - between 1-6 weeks.

Periodically, hot flashes may appear again, sometimes even after six months to a year. The MENOPAUSE formula should be then given again until the symptoms subside.

MENOPAUSE also tonifies the kidney yin. This can help with fatigue, a commonly experienced symptom along with hot flashes.
