TCM Explanation of the Formula
The first four herbs form the well-known blood tonic formula called Si Wu Tang – Four Substance Decoction: Angelica Tang-Kuei, Ligusticum Rhizome, Peony Root and Rehmannia Root.

Polygonum ShouWu and Lycium Berry not only tonify blood, but act at an even deeper level to tonify the kidney jing. Studies have shown them both to have a pronounced effect on enhancing the immune system.
When tonifying blood, it is important to also have some herbs to tonify qi (which helps produce and move the blood). Astragalus is one of the premier herbs for qi tonification (without adding heat).

Ashwanghanda, a well-known Ayurvedic herb, also tonifies qi and has a calming and stabilizing effect on the body and nervous system.

Licorice Root is a mild qi tonic, but also helps the synergy of the formula as a whole.

Gingko has been extensively studied and shows a marked influence on increase of brain function. In fact, it improves blood flow throughout the entire body and supports vascular health. It is also recognized as a powerful antioxidant.

Citrus Peel supports the tonification and regulation of qi.
