Clinical Use
• Cough with yellow or green phlegm
• Tightness in the chest area
• Cold/flu symptoms with cough predominating
• Wetness and Heat congesting in the lungs
Suggested Dosage
2 tsp. in C warm water 1-6 times daily
away from meals. Take one of the doses at bedtime and another
during the night if still coughing. The dosage should be adjusted
according to the severity of the cough. Reduce the dosage
as the symptoms improve. Can be taken alternatively (20 -
30 minutes between formulas) with Attack
#1 if necessary.
Cautions & Considerations
Not for a pattern of dryness and heat congesting
in the lungs (see Cough #1). COUGH
#2 can be taken with antibiotics but not with western
drugs for coughing. This formula is intended for acute coughs
and can safely be taken at the higher dosages for up to two
weeks. The dosage should be adjusted according to the severity
of the cough. Reduce the dosage as the symptoms improve.
TCM Explanation of the Formula
An attack of Pathogenic External Wind heat commonly ends up
affecting the lungs. The viral strains that have developed
over recent years tend to move quickly and deeply into the
upper respiratory area.
Coughing up yellow or green phlegm indicates toxic heat congesting
in the lungs. This is a potentially serious stage. It is essential
to treat the condition aggressively by taking COUGH
#2 every 2 –3 hours if necessary until the
symptoms begin to resolve.
Fritillaria Zhe Bei, Andrographis, Trichosanthis Fruit,
Isatis Root & Leaf and Licorice Root
are the main herbs used to clear Toxic Wet Heat.
Fritillaria Zhe Bei is used in many wet heat
cough formulas due to its abilities to stop the cough reflex
and break up the wet heat congesting in the lungs.
Trichosanthes Fruit breaks up the heated
phlegm.
Andrographis and Isatis Root and
Leaf are three strong acting herbs that have been
shown to have pronounced anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.
Licorice Root assists this group with getting
rid of the toxic heat, soothes the lungs, and helps balance
the other dry herbs in the formula.
Phlegm congestion is causing the symptoms of cough and tightness
of chest. The addition of heat makes it stickier and more
difficult to expel. The coughing will stop when the normal
circulation of the Lung qi can be restored. This requires
additional herbs to open the lungs and treat the stagnation
aspect of the toxic wet heat. The longer the lungs remain
congested, the weaker they will become. This will only compound
the difficulty in eliminating the increasingly entrenched
toxic wet heat.
This next group of herbs work in consort to open the stagnated
lung qi and stop the coughing: Peucedanum Root, Platycodon
Root, Morus Root, Morus Leaf, Trichosanthes Root and
Citrus Peel.
Trichosanthes Root and Licorice Root
also help to counter any over-drying effect of the formula.
